About us

Mary Hare School for Deaf Children serves the needs of hundreds of deaf children every year, including many children from West Berkshire. On average 25% of the children attending Mary Hare Primary School come from Newbury and the surrounding areas.  Mary Hare is a unique special school where deaf children access the full national curriculum and are taught by qualified Teachers of the Deaf, with additional specialist support to enable them to achieve their full potential.  We have been part of the local community since 1946, when the School came to its current location near Snelsmore Common.

The school swimming pool is open to local people for swimming lessons at weekends and in the evening.  Arlington Arts Centre was opened in 2006 and offers a full arts programme for local people and has become a popular venue for music, theatre and other shows.

In the town centre the Mary Hare Hearing Centre caters for the needs of anyone with a hearing impairment.

We also provide music therapy services for other local schools for children with special needs.  The Happy Days Club for children with autism is run from the School Youth Club and some of the pupils at Mary Hare School help as volunteers.

Children who attend the school are paid for by their Local Authority.  However the fees we charge are not sufficient to develop our facilities and for this we rely on fundraising and donations.

We need your help so we can continue to educate deaf children from West Berkshire and further afield.  We are currenly fundraising for various projects in school for well being, science and funding for intervention places while students are awaiting truibunals.

Join the west Berkshire Lottery today and the very best of luck to you!

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Ms Anne Munby
