Living Paintings purpose is to improve the quality of life for blind and partially sighted people of all ages by working to end the social and educational isolation and exclusion that they suffer daily. We do this by designing, creating and publishing unique Touch to See books that enable an understanding of the visual images that colour and inform all our lives. Our special books contain tactile images that are brought to life by entertaining, informative and immersive audio recordings. We are the only charity, or organisation, to do this.
In this way, we provide access to images that help children learn to read, support students in school and inspire interests that enable lifelong learning for adults. All our Touch to See books contain colour references encouraging interaction between blind people and the sighted people around them, breaking down the barriers that create social exclusion.
Our community-based Touch to See Book Clubs have been created to alleviate the terrible isolation and loneliness experienced by blind and partially sighted people. Through these clubs, we nurture stimulating social opportunities that encourage and support people living with sight loss to come together to share our books. This safe and welcoming environment fosters peer-to-peer support and empowers older people to cope with the enormous daily challenges that sight loss brings.
Our hugely varied catalogue of Touch to See book titles are loaned, free of charge from our postal library, to ensure that all visually impaired people, no matter where they live or their financial circumstances, can access unlimited loans and gain a feel for the visual world.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
