Greenham Control Tower joins our 80 local good causes!

11 April 2019

Greenham Control Tower opened its doors in Summer 2018 as a visitor centre and community hub. Its aim is to preserve and share the historical legacy of one of the few buildings remaining from the period when the common was an airfield of considerable significance to the history of the twentieth century. As well as telling the story of Greenham Common, the tower seeks to support and cooperate with local organisations for the benefit of the whole community. The tower mounts a comprehensive programme of talks, art exhibitions, performances and activity days for children relating to its key themes. Run by volunteers, the tower promotes four key themes:

·  Nature conservation and wildlife

·  The military and cold war history of the common

·  The social history of the common

·  The role of protest in society

Many people visit the common to walk, run, cycle or ride horses. The Grade II listed building has a vibrant café with a dog friendly area. Panels in the building provide information about how the different rooms were used and the part the common played in the national and indeed international history of the latter half of the twentieth century. The diamond shaped cupola is the jewel in the tower’s crown, offering stunning views over the whole common and North Wessex Downs beyond.

Director of Greenham Control Tower, Professor Andy Kempe said:

“With the help of funds raised through West Berkshire Lottery we hope to be able to develop this provision and offer engaging, entertaining and educational events to visitors from across the entire age range. We are particularly keen to raise funds in order to expand our collection of artefacts and recorded oral histories and so give both a hands on and personalised dimension to our developing museum.”
